An extremely scarce work. Johann Shroder (1600-1664) was a German physician and pharmacologist and is credited as the first person to recognise arsenic as an element - producing it by heating its oxide in 1649. This work was published in Latin in 1662. This copy has been recently rebound in half leather with marbled boards. The spine has gilt lined raised bands and titles. New endpapers have been added. Explanatory text in German and French.The Picture-Book was published in 12 volumes from 1790 to 1843 and eventually included 1,185 handcoloured copperplates. Bertuch wished to reproduce the magic of discovery, and mixed engravings of plants, animals, shells, minerals, volcanoes and technical inventions in a utopian chaos, so that a child could encounter afresh the wonders of the natural world at the turn of every page. In contemporary unlettered full calf (a little worn with minor loss to board corners, sometime skilfully rebacked in matching leather), five raised spine bands, internally clean with only the lightest of occasional dust staining. Muller was deputy head of the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich, where he was instrumental to its transformation into a disciplined cadet academy. An attractive first edition example of his first work.
