Designed to Illustrate, in the most Easy and Natural Manner, the Phoenomena of the Earth and Heavens, and to shew the Correspondence of the Two Spheres. With a great variety of Astronomical and Geographical Problems. SECOND EDITION 1769, "in which a comprehensive view of the solar system is given; and the Use of the Globes is farther shewn in the explanation of Spherical Triangles". 8vo, approximately 205 x 130 mm, 8 x 5 inches, engraved frontispiece (Plate 1) and 13 engraved folding plates, of which 3 large folding, pages: xxviii, 345, (7) the last section is Adams' Catalogue of Instruments. Bound in full modern panelled speckled calf, gilt decorated raised bands, richly gilt in compartments, gilt lettered red morocco label, new endpapers. Very slight faint damp staining to top edge of early prelim pages, tip of 1 margin corner missing. A very good clean tight copy. George Adams (1704-1773) optician, was mathematical instrument maker to King George III and one of the most famous English microscope and globe makers of the mid-eighteenth century. He published the popular Micrographia illustrata; or, The Knowledge of the Microscope Explain'd in 1746 and introduced a number of improvements in microscope design. Our book was first published in 1766 with a 4 page Dedication to the King written for Adams by Samuel Johnson which is printed in all editions (unsigned - see Courtney and Nichol Smith, Bibliography of Johnson, page 112). Rare original poetry book with cloth covered boards, copyright 1880 by J. W. Shoemaker & Co. This edition published in 1906 by the Penn Publishing company, Philadelphia. From the estate of my great-great grandfather.Includes many unique poems and recitations such as "To a skull", "Uncle Daniel's Introduction to a Mississippi Steamer", "The Leak in the Dyke", etc. More well-known poetry includes "Song of Birds", "Old Ironsides", and "Bannock Burn" by Robbie Burns. Light rubbing and bumps to outside spine edges. Back cover and interior cloth covered board has a stain at top. Original owner's name and address from 1908, but no other writing or marks. First 2 pages have a stain at top, but text of 192 pages of poetry and recitations is totally clean with light tanning of pages.
