Frontispiece engraved portrait of the late Andrew Jackson Downing and six other steel engraved plates depicting country gardens. 108 other full and partial-page engravings depicting trees, garden views and plans. Owner name (N. B. Sylvester, believed to be author and historian Nathaniel Bartlett Sylvester) on title page and one page of text. A revised edition of landscape architect Andrew Jackson Downings classic text, revised after his death with an extensive supplement by Downings friend, banker-turned-horticulturist Henry Winthrop Sargent. Sargent expounds on his own experiences with landscaping at his Hudson Valley residence, other country homes, and newer deciduous and evergreen plants. ; 576 pages .
