New York: Orange Judd, 1865. Seventh Edition Revised. Hardcover. Good + condition. This edition of the seminal work on landscape gardening is expanded with the addition of material pertaining to Central Park. This copy belonged to John D. Quackenbos, Columbia University Professor & summer resident at Lake Sunapee, New London, NH. Quackenbos' signature in pencil and extensive annotations throughout. Soo Nipi Park was considered one of the greatest angling resorts of New England.
Downing lived in Newburgh on the Hudson River, and many of his designs were done with the Hudson River area in mind. Downing died in the fire of the Hudson riverboat The Henry Clay in 1852 at the early age of 36, even then recognized as the foremost landscape designer of America.
8vo, xv, 576 pp, engraved frontispiece portrait and b&w steel engraved plates, with woodcut text illustrations throughout. Green gilt decorated covers, with gilt title at spine. Spine ends rubbed. Deaccessed from the New London NH Public Library, lib number at spine, library label at front paste down. Previous owner inscription: Soo Nipi Park Lodge, John D. Quackenbos.
