About This Item

London: Henry Frowde, Oxford University Press and Hodder & Stoughton, 1918. 446p. + 7 plates & 7 charts. A very good copy with two tears in the cloth of the outer joints along the spine, one of 1 3/4" on the front along the spine and the other one inch along the spine at the bottom of the back cover ; the spine is somewhat faded. What makes this a particularly interesting copy are the following three paper items which are laid in. 1. A Citation [for] Private Winn W. Chase, 104 Ambulance Co. for exceptionally meritorious and conspicuous services for Trench Fever Investigations, American Expeditionary Forces. This was awarded on 19 April 1919 and is signed by John J. Pershing, Commander-in-Chief. It measures 10 1/4" x 14" and is printed on one side. It is a certificate. 2. A signed letter from E. M. Welles, Jr. Colonel, Medical Corps which verifies that Private Winn W. Chase was transferred to the Chemical Warfare Service on October 23, 1918. 3. A four-page pamphlet which specifies six heroic actions and names the participants. Forty Privates, including Private Winn W. Chase, are cited for the following: "For courageous sacrifice in submitting to experiments to determine the manner of transmission of Trench Fever and contracting the same, at St. Pol, Pas de Calais, France, in the month of February, 19l8; thereby performing an eminent service to the Allied cause and to humanity." It should be noted that a full page in the book is devoted to W. W. Chase's Case History and his Chart is included (on pages 324 and 325). 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. Second Edition. Cloth. Very Good. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall.
