About This Item
(Cape Town: the author, 1999) 0620237473. 148 x 210 mm; laminated pictorial wrappers; pp. 31; photographs; line drawings. Fine condition. Uncommon. "The donkey seems to be more adaptable to the changing climate of the Karoo than the horse or ox and certainly more capable of long periods of moving in a monotonous circular path which is required for operating the bakkiespomp or 'horse mill'. For years many farmers refused to admit donkeys to their farms because of their 'sickening cry' and their denuding of the pasture near the farmstead. Some farmers still maintain such an attitude but today most people respect the contribution donkeys have made and at least two statues of donkeys have been erected in South Africa as a tribute to the donkeys." .
