TRILBY by GEORGE du MAURIER - 1947

George du Maurier (1834 – 1896) was a Franco-British cartoonist and writer, known for his work in Punch and for this novel Trilby (1894), which introduced Svengali and was the inspiration for the Phantom of the Opera.

This story, of the poor artist's model Trilby O'Ferrall who is transformed into a diva under the spell of the evil musical genius Svengali, created a sensation. It forever changed the public perception of hypnotism and there were Trilby parties, Trilby fashions, Trilby merchandise—the city of Trilby Florida is named after her, as is the style of hat many people still wear.

This copy is a first edition of Number 2 of only three Folio Society books published in its first year.

It contains 6 of du Maurier's full-page pencil sketches.

Large type, beautifully set and laid out. Printed in Belgium.

Condition: The dust jacket shows wear and repair. There are two 1" pieces of it missing, at the top of the spine and on the back.

The book itself is in superb condition. The pages are clean and clear, although there is some yellowing. There is a little puckering on the inside front cover. But it's a beautiful book.
