Boston: Roberts Bros, 1897. 133p.+ads, photographic frontispiece, first American edition cloth boards gilt, casing is somewhat handled, stained and edgeworn, text foxed throughout. A sound and not unattractive copy. Antiwar and anti-colonial novel by South African novelist, pacifist and feminist. This edition has the gruesome frontisphoto depicting a crowd of white South Africans gazing upon a trio of black Africans they have lynched. The racist pejorative is used throughout to emphasize the brutality depicted.
