Richmond: Franklin Press , 1819. This is the first American edition of these two volumes, with frontispieces, engraved coats of arms. The map and 2 separate plates are not present; the frontispiece bust of Smith is present and in very good condition. These are the original flamed sheep covers with red lettered labels on the spines. Covers and bindings worn (but reasonably tight) with slight fire damage to head of volume two. Smith's "True Travels..." were originally published in 1630. The "Generall Historie..." was first published in London in 1624, and because of wide and varied interests has been reprinted many times over the years, with the Richmond edition the first in the USA. There is some light dampstaining to the upper gutter in volume two, for about the first 20 pages. Although Captain Smith was quite a self-promoter, his observations and writings still provided a great deal of valuable information. Generally a good set.. Full-Leather. Good/No Jacket. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
