New York: Macmillan, 1928. First Printing. Hardcover. Fair. Angela Pruszynska. Octavo, 218 pages, textured blue cloth, spine roughened and with two small punctures, minor foxing

Author's first book, and with only the September, 1928 printing on the copyright page. It was awarded the 1929 Newbery Award Medal, given for the preceding year's most distinguished contribution to American children's literature (finishing ahead of Wanda Gag's MILLIONS OF CATS, among others). In post-WWI Europe, Kelly made the first of his visits to the newly-recognized nation of Poland. For 1925, the Kosciuszko Foundation sent him to the Jagellonian University at Krakow as the first American exchange scholar. This copy is inscribed by Kelly on the half-title page with a quatrain from "Rota [The Oath]", the Polish National Anthem, first sung publicly in 1910 at Krakow, marking the 500th anniversary of the Polish victory at the Battle of Grunwald. It was impersonally signed at Washington DC, May 15, 1929.
