The Hosken copy, with their bookplate to the front pastedown, and that of Maurice Katz to the front free endpaper. 12mo; original blue papered boards, with title label to upper cover; pp. viii + 50. Some wear to boards; backstrip largely missing; light browning. Good. (SABIB 2, p. 495; Hosken, p. 92) Originally appearing in the North American Review, August and September 1918, this is the account of one of the four main Reformers sentenced to death in the Z.A.R. at the time of the Jameson Raid, but spared. As in another of his works, as described by Mendelssohn, Hammond "is careful to impress his audience with the fact that he is an American, and therefore not biassed by England or the Boer Republics." .

First American account ""of an event which plunged the whole civilized world into a state of intense excitement"" and discloses ""the connection of the Jameson Raid and the Boer War with Germany's plan to found a world-domination on the ruins of Democracy."" 50 pages, articles reprinted from the North American Review. Scarce work, especially in the jacket. Advertisements on jacket flaps and back cover. Preface dated October 1918. Front hinge cracking, crease on back cover, endpapers tanned from jacket contact; jacket has spine tears, losses at top and bottom, edges browned, well spotted and dampstained. 1"" circular area of staining in the margin, text unaffected.
