New York: L.B. Fischer, 1943. First Edition. First Printing. Octavo (21.75); rust-colored cloth, with titling and decorations stamped in ivory on spine and front cover; 496pp, [4]. Spine ends gently nudged, with a barely-noticeable shallow stain to lower corner tips of pp.439-484; a tight, Near Fine copy. Wolfert's first novel, and his only venture into crime fiction. Tucker's People, based loosely on the life and times of mobster Dutch Schultz, was praised as one of the finest and most realistic crime novels of its day - a novel Walter Rideout credited as "one of the most distinguished novels of the whole forties." Basis for Abraham Polonsky's sinister film noir Force of Evil (1948), starring John Garfield, Beatrice Pearson, and Thomas Gomez. THE DARK PAGE, Vol.1, p.280-281; RIDEOUT p.299.
