London: R. Hindmarsh, 1840. Hardcover. Very good condition. Sibly [1757 - 1840] was a Swedenborgian, or follower of the writings of the 18th century theologian Emanuel Swedenborg. He became very involved in the New Christian Church in 1787 and managed a congregation by 1790. He was responsible for much of the liturgy of the New Church and hence the sermons in this volume, each paginated individually. Sermons titles include: The Creation of Man by the Triune God, and his Prerogatives Defined, 26pp [2 ads]; The Christian's Golden Chain; or the Divine Human Titles of the Lord, 27pp, [1 ads]; The Lord's Thirst on the Cross and Laying Down His Life, 23pp, [1 ads]; The Cause of the Lord's Sufferings, and the True Nature of the Atonement, 24pp, [1 ads]; Spiritual Magnetism or the Nature of that Faith which Removes Mountains, 22pp, [2 ads]; Simon Sifted by Satan as Wheat and Upheld by the Lord, 26pp, [2 ads]; Sin Against the Holy Ghost, 23pp, [1 ads]; Encouragement for Babes in the Church, 24pp; Elijah Fed by Ravens, 25pp, [2 ads]; The Lord Passing By Before Elijah, 24pp; The Destruction of Babylon, it's Nature and Effects, 25pp, [2 ads]; Death a Continuation of Life, 25pp. Book plate reads "Case Shelf 1--3 Robert Carter". An interesting manuscript inscription on ffep, "The property of Joseph Leigh of Ports - procured from England put and kept in circulation for the Benefit of Mankind New Church... Anno ?? Old Church .... 1797. Portsmouth New Hampshire". 8vo, brown leather spine and boards with Sibly's Sermons on red title label on spine. Each sermon with its own title page, numbered individually bound together, with advertising, each with original publication date as well as 1840. Spine leather cracked at base, rubbed at foot, otherwise very clean. OCLC: 9264272 at 6 libraries.
