Two Cheers for Democracy, Forster, E. M. Published by Edward Arnold & Company, London, 1951. First Edition. 12mo up to 7½" tall., 372pp. Book review and newspaper clipping laid in. Navy cloth boards with gilt titles, red top edge. Pencilled name and date to endpaper, toning to endpapers and light toning to text block; otherwise, contents are in fine condition. Dustjacket has chipping, small tears and a missing piece to top edge rear panel.

A collection of essays. The first section entitled 'The Second Darkness', contains versions of Forster's anti-Nazi broadcasts of 1940, and other political commentary. The second section entitles 'What I Believe', contains Forster's reflection on art in general, as well as on particular artists including Virginia Woolf, Andre Gide, Orwell, Tolstoy.

"We may still contrive to raise three cheers for democracy, although at present she only deserves two." E.M. Forster, OM CH was an English fiction writer, essayist and librettist. Many of his novels examine class difference and hypocrisy, including the highly praised novels: "A Room with a View," "Howards End" and "A Passage to India."

Essays that applaud democracy's toleration of individual freedom and self-criticism and deplore its encouragement of mediocrity: "We may still contrive to raise three cheers for democracy, although at present she only deserves two."
