About This Item

New York: Harcourt Brace and Company, 1951. First edition. Hardcover. 363 pages. A collection of essays from the author of "A Room with a View," "Howards End" and "A Passage to India." An about very good copy with bumping to the bottom corners in an about very good dust jacket with chipping to the corners, spine ends, some edge tears and other wear. Still, a solid copy.

Synopsis

Essays that applaud democracy's toleration of individual freedom and self-criticism and deplore its encouragement of mediocrity: "We may still contrive to raise three cheers for democracy, although at present she only deserves two."
