Octavo (9 1/2 X 6 1/2 inches) Boston: Lee and Shepard Publishers 10 Milk Street, 1896. Third Edition. 352 pages illustrated with black and white half tone photographic portraits, and deck scenes on the famous ship, biographical notes, list of officers, and general muster role.

Hardcover, cloth, very condition (mild age toning, slight fading to spine, faint spotting from old liquid spill on front cover, not affecting image on cover or contents). Bound in original decorative gray stamped cloth binding, with a representative blue line drawing profile of the ship sailing on the ocean under a red, white, and blue Confederate flag blowing in the breeze. Title in gilt on front cover repeated on spine, and positioned over full figure drawing, in blue, of a sailor holding his sword, with one foot resting on a capstan.

A first hand account by one of the officers aboard the famous Confederate warship during the Civil War; praised by the well known biographer Allan Nevins in his "Civil War Books A Critical Bibliography" as "One of the best accounts, interesting, reliable, comprehensive, and thoughtful; .... "

First Edition, very good condition, 18 pages, original stitched wrappers, with stab marks along the spine, and minor chipping to edges; not affecting contents which are intact and clean; Wm. C. Bryant & Co. Printers.

Hamilton was a "Southern Union man." He opposed secession, and slavery; he eventually became Governor of Texas.His letter to Lincoln, dated July 28, 1863 shortly after Gettysburg, supports the Emancipation Proclamation. He proclaims slavery an enemy of the nation, and states that former slaves are " ... capable of being made allies in the common cause of freedom, justice, and humanity."
