Typed Letter Signed ‘T.S.Eliot’, to Miss Gwynneth Thurburn, Central School of Speech Training and Dramatic Art, about the performance of the girls chorus in his verse play Murder in the Cathedral by ELIOT, T.S

T.S.Eliot (1888-1965), poet, critic and dramatist. The first performance of Murder in the Cathedral, about the martydom of Thomas Becket, was given on 15 June 1935 in the Chapter House of Canterbury Cathedral. The production then moved to the Mercury Theatre, Notting Hill Gate in London and ran there for several months. Eliot asks Miss Thurburn for the names of the girls so that he can send each of them a copy of the play. “I cannot help wondering about at the ability of the chorus to go on night after night, apparently for an indefinite period and in the midst of their work. I don’t know how they manage to do it unless some of their other work is remitted because of this When I wrote the play I never expected that it would be played for more than a week or two at a time!”
