Not even a presidential secretary, but a lowly vice presidential aide to Vice President Charles G. Dawes, second-in-command under Calvin Coolidge (1925-29). TLS, 1p, 8½" X 11", Chicago, IL, 9 September 1925. Addressed to J.V. Holland. Very good. Original folds (not weakened); lightly age toned. Writing while out of town on "The Vice President's Chamber" letterhead, Chaney thanks an admirer with an unusual request for a letter received "just as he was leaving Chicago for an extended speaking tour of the Pacific coast.... There is being sent you under separate cover, with the compliments of the Vice President, a pipe of the type he smokes...." Boldly signed in brown ink. Most odd!

We have 14 copies available starting at $35.00.

A letter and clean, crisp autograph by marketing pioneer and famous Philadelphia department store founder and owner, John Wanamaker (1858 - 1922), a merchandising genius and proponent of the power of advertising, who employed the first full-time ad copywriter, and whose other credits include the creation of the price tag and the money-back guarantee. Wanamaker would later go on to be appointed the 35th Postmaster General of the United States by President Benjamin Harrison, where he issued the first commemorative stamp and introduced many efficiencies in a tenure otherwise marked by controversy. Reading in part: "Your letter of the 24th finds me enclosing the sheets of what purports to be an account book of one of my own name, whose writing I think I never saw and am not able to identify it is of no value except that… Read More

Description:
This huge corruption investigation of the 1980s involved the FBI, IRS, USPS, Chicago Police Department and other law enforcement agencies and resulted in a large number of indictments and convictions of judges, lawyers, sheriffs, police officers and court officials -- among the top of which was this federal judge, convicted of extorting $200,000 in "loans" from those under him; his 18-year sentence was later reduced to 13 years and he was released in 1990. TLS, 5pp (rectos only), 8½" X 11", Oxford, WI, 1987 December 29. Addressed to a Chicago publisher. Very good. Two faint original fold lines and 3/4" edge tear at right margin. Writing from prison, Holzer congratulates this Chicago publisher on his success, then boldly states: "...allow me to introduce myself. I am a prisoner at the Federal Prison Camp, Oxford, Wisconsin." Interestingly, when Holzer was sentenced for his crimes, he remarked, 'I stand before you a convicted felon, exhausted, disrobed and defeated. ... I have committed crimes. Those… Read More

Description:
New York, 1989. One page, typed. 8vo. Old folds. Fine. One page, typed. 8vo. Becket & Giacometti as Lucky and Ponzo. Sculptor Michael De Lisio (1911-2003) writes to actress and writer Helen Bishop (1931-2015) about his ideas for a sculpture of Waiting for Godot with Beckett and Giacometti as Lucky and Ponzo. De Lisio was a keen devotee of Beckett (Helen's husband Tom Bishop was a friend of the playwright). "I am certain that Beckett will weather the popular cultural icon aura he seems to be acquiring. For my 1969 show at the Hanover Gallery, London, I supplied self-quotes for the nine bronzes on exhibition. Robert Louis Stevenson's was ws 'There must be somethign wrong in me, or I would not be so popular." De Lisio also had solo exhibitions at the Nova Scotia College of Art in Halifax (1969); the Minneapolis Institute of Arts (1971); the Addison Gallery of American Art in Andover, Mass. (1973); and the Smith College Museum of Art in Northampton, Mass. (1974 and 1980). He had New York gallery shows… Read More

An anecdotal letter from one of the foremost travel writers of the first half of the 20th century.Reading in part: "I have had so many exciting experiences that I really cannot think of one I should put ahead of the others. Perhaps escaping from bandits in China would be, or almost drowning in a river in the Andes in South America ... Personally I have found it better to do as well as I can everything that came to hand, and then let circumstances show the way to go. For instance, I learned several foreign languages in college, without knowing until much later that they would be indispensable to the career I finally chose - or which chose me." American, Harry A Franck (1881-1962) chronicled his adventurous… Read More

Unbound. Fine. One quarto page on United States Senate printed letterhead, Washington, D.C., dated October 23, 1978. Folded twice for mailing, else near fine. We have some suspicions that the signature is in the hand of a secretary. The letter states, in part: "Thank you for your letter regarding legislation to extend the deadline for the ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment. I appreciate having your comments. I fully support actions aimed at insuring the ultimate ratification of this long overdue constitutional amendment." He goes on to explain his role in introducing a resolution to extend the deadline for the ratification of the E. R. A., and its importance to the United States: "I continue to feel that every citizen of our nation will benefit from this renewed pledge to protect our basic rights, liberties, and responsibilities, as well as our dignity as individuals..." Old folds, lower right hand corner chipped not affecting text or signature, otherwise a fine letter with a bold, clear signature. 1p. on Sergievsky's personal letterhead. 8vo. A letter written by the renowned Russian ace and world record setting Sikorsky test pilot, on behalf of Danish-born ballet and Broadway dancer, Paul Haakon, considered by many to be one of greatest ballet dancers of the 20th century. Reading in part: "I have known Paul Haakon Longreen for over sixteen years. In the theatrical profession he is known under the name of Paul Haakon. It is very well known that he is one of the best dancers in the world. He gave up his dancing recently to become a flying instructor, purely to serve his country... I sincerely believe that anything which could be done to facilitate his joining the United States Army Air Force reserve would benefit our war effort."
