Very good. - 24 words typed on a cream sheet of New York Times letterhead with the newspaper's address printed at the top and Frankel's title "Max Frankel / Editor, Editorial Page" below & to the left. The New York Times watermark appears in the lower right corner of the letterhead. Dated February 5, 1982. Signed "Max Frankel" in black ink. The letterhead is lightly bumped. Folded twice for mailing. Near fine. <p>Frankel writes to Mrs. Robert E. Sherwood, widow of the playwright: "I am, sorry to say, not the author", but as the responsible editor, he thanks her for her kind note.<p>Max Frankel was born in Germany in 1930 and came to the United States in 1940. He spent a long and brilliant career at the New York Times, joining the paper as a full-time reporter in 1952. After the war, he spent some time as a foreign correspondent, then served as chief Washington correspondent and head of the Washington bureau from 1968 to 1971. He was editor of the editorial page from 1977 to 1986 and executive editor of the paper from 1986 to 1994. He was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in 1973 for his coverage of Richard Nixon's trip to China.
