Kirby was considered the "spokesman, interpreter, and bulwark of the Tory and Loyalist ideal." In this poem he emulates Scott's "Marmion" in a nostalgic expression of an idealized Canadian future, one in which Upper Canada forever establishes its historic relation to the greatness of Great Britain. TPL 8731.
