Title translates into English as, "On the Hispanic Locale-names in Hebrew-Jewish Writings. " Librarian and scholar Alexander Marx's copy of this landmark publication with his notes throughout. "Marx (1878-1953) was an American historian, bibliographer and librarian... Marx published articles in many languages and was at home in both classical and Semitic languages. Marx contributed monographs and articles to journals on a wide variety of subjects... and with Max L. Margolis wrote ‘A History of the Jewish People, ' (a) pioneering work. " (Wikipedia, 2016) This volume of "Zeitschrift..." ("Journal of the Science of Judaism") was the very first volume of the periodical that began the first serious scientific inquiry of Judaism and Jewish texts. Zunz was not only the author of this article, but was also editor of the landmark journal. "Leopold Zunz (1794 - 1886) was the founder of Academic Judaic Studies (Wissenschaft des Judentums) , the critical investigation of Jewish literature, hymnology and ritual. Zunz's historical investigations and contemporary writings had an important influence on contemporary Judaism. " This is Zunz's first article from the first volume (only 2 volumes were published) of ‘Wissenschaft des Judentums, ' published 10 years before Zunz's "Gottesdienstliche Vorträge der Juden, " which has been called the most important Jewish book of the 19th century.
