Chapter five (pp. 48-55) contains the earliest fictional reference to the game of baseball, including choicing up sides by grabbing the bat. Precedes Everett's CHANGING BASE, 1868, which Grobani labels the first novel to incorporate baseball into its plot. INSCRIBED, "Presented to Mrs. J.M. Casey By the Rector for their little and much loved daughter May M. Casey. Through thye auspices of his son. Alfred B. Beach.".
