About This Item

New York: Frederick A. Stokes Co., September, 1907. Oblong 4to. [63 leaves (unnumbered).]. Title printed in black, the remaining leaves all colour lithographed in comic strip format. Quarter-brown cloth over colour-illustrated boards (minor rubbing, scuffing, minor wear to corners, inner hinges repaired), still G copy, w/ former ownership bookplate on front pastedown. First edition, thus, of this early comic strip version of the beloved African-American tales in southern dialect, with illustrations by Conde very reminiscent of the images executed by A.B. Frost in earlier Uncle Remus works. These strips first appeared from June to October, 1906 in the McClure Syndicate Sunday comic strip. These stories were drawn from the author’s own experiences of collecting oral myths and legends, many of which were numerous versions of the same story.
