William Still (1821-1902), the child of emancipated slaves, was a Philadelphia-based "conductor" on the Underground Railroad who helped untold numbers of fugitive slaves to safety. He came to be called "The Father of The Underground Railroad". During these years, he kept meticulous, secret notes about correspondence, interviews,a nd observations recording the stories of these fugitives, documents that he hid in a grave until they could safely be made public with the publication of his 1872 book.
