First-person narratives of escapes to freedom in the North. They reveal the active role slaves played in their own escapes, with the help of free blacks and some whites--risking all they had for freedom. The book is in brown cloth over spine with sharp and bright gilt titles, gold boards, clean and unmarked, with light rubbing to lower edge of front panel and heel. Tight, solid and square binding. Internals quite clean, no marks of any kind, no creases. 308 pages, indexed. 5.75 x 8.75 inches. 1987, Prentice Hall, New York.
