The publisher's ad touts Beadle's book as full of useful, first-hand information for those dreaming of moving west, with profiles of "the hardy frontier farmer; the wary hunter andd trapper; the reckless miner; the cruel and degraded savage; the hard-working 'Heathen Chinee;' the 'much-married' Mormon; the strange remnants of the once-powerful Aztec race...." Brown cloth hc with blind-stamped designs and gilt title on front, thick 8vo (21 cm), yellow endpapers, [viii] including frontispieces and title page, 15-22 [6 illustration and map], 23-32 TOC, unnumbered plates, 35-824 pp [6 ads]. Good-: heavily worn with boards showing and spine cocked, ex-library with pocket and minor markings plus po name and markings, occasional smudges but pages good, blue mark p. 731, missing final ad page.
