About This Item

Little, Brown and Company, 1938. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Good/No Jacket. 297 pages. Cover 5-1/4" x 8-1/4", cloth bound, small spot on front board, corners slightly worn. Marginal note in pencil by a former owner, Prof. Warner Berthoff, on one page of the chapter on Walt Whitman; otherwise text is clear and unmarked. Label pasted on ffep states "With the compliments of the Author." Evidently the initial recipient was Lucy Donnelly, long-time head of the Department of English at Bryn Mawr College. Pasted on rfep is a letter to Miss Donnelly from John A. Reed, VP of Little, Brown, dated Dec. 21, 1938, advising that a paragraph on p. 294 has been altered in all copies of the book except those, like this one, "sent out before the matter was called to our attention" by the estate of M. Carey Thomas, the former President of Bryn Mawr College and cousin of the author. The replacement paragraph, concerning Thomas's attitude towards money, is supplied in the letter, while the printed book contains the passage that scandalized M. Carey Thomas's estate executors.

About Berthoff Books

Berthoff Books sells books previously owned by the late Warner B. Berthoff, Professor of English and American Literature, emeritus, at Harvard University, and members of his family. Some books contain marginalia by Warner Berthoff, the late Prof. Ann E. Berthoff (U. Mass-Boston, English composition and rhetoric), or others, which we aim to describe accurately. Our inventory features English and American fiction and poetry, 20th-century literary criticism, world literature, history, and philosophy. Other categories are history and politics of Australia, Asia, South Africa and the Middle East; intelligence agencies and gnostic beliefs; Russian literature and criticism; and Russian and Soviet history.
