E-181: Arco. Very Good in Good dust jacket. 1957. First Edition; First Printing. Hardcover. Hardcover. 8vo. Arco Publications Limited, London, 1957. 255 pgs. First Edition/First Printing. Eric Patton DJ has shelf-wear, rubbing present to the DJ especially around the extremities. No ownership marks present. Text is clean and free of marks, binding tight and solid, boards clean with no wear present. 'Heinrich Böll's new novel is a sensitive, moving story of people permanently displaced, strangers in their homeland. Through the eyes of two war orphans, for whom the war continues after the guns are stilled, we see their search for some human core in the disorder and confusion of their lives. For Martin born in 1942 and fatherless since 1944, it was a world in which there were no rules. For Heinrich it was a world in which a succession of 'uncles' shared his mother's room; one in which the black market was the school that sharpened his wits. The boys' floundering mothers, and the grandmother, a dope addict who gives the boys a taste of night life, round out the moral jungle in which the past is not yet dead and the future is still to be born. E-181; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 254 pages .
