About This Item

Berkeley, CA: Karen Shimoda, 2019. Original work. 3.75 x 5.5 inches (closed). Five-panel accordion book, with acrylic paintings on mylar mounted on each panel, signed and dated by the artist.

Unique artist’s book. New.

Karen Shimoda is a painter living in Berkeley, California. For several years she has been converting Moleskine accordion notebooks into both editioned and unique artist’s books. After painting the covers in acrylic, she mounts paintings, prints, or monotypes on the panels.

Universal Absolution is from a recent series of unique books containing abstract acrylic paintings evocative of natural processes and environments. See The Rabbit Hole, also on the site, for another example, and please don't hesitate to inquire for descriptions and images of other books in the series.

About Passages Bookshop

Passages Bookshop stocks fine, rare, and unusual books and graphic art, with a concentration on modern and contemporary literature and art (particularly poetry and the avant-garde), artist's books, fine printing, and the book arts. The successor to New York City's Bridge Bookshop (late 1980s), Passages opened in Albuquerque in 1994 and relocated to Portland, Oregon, in 1997. In November of 2015 we moved to a new retail shop and gallery centrally located in Portland's east side, two blocks north of the convention center, where we are typically open Thursday through Saturday from 12:00 to 6:00 pm, as well as by appointment or chance. Proprietor: David Abel,
