About This Item

the Curwen Press. London: Printed at the Curwen Press, 1944 8vo., soft card wraps with attached dust jacket printed in blue; pp. [vi], v-vi, 107, [iii]; frontis and an additional 3 full-page black and white illustrations, one in-text diagram; wraps a little spotted, flaps glued to the card covers, as issued, front cover a little pulled away from the text block at gutter; a very good copy, otherwise. Limited edition, no. 367 of 1000 copies on handmade paper, signed by the author in blue ink to the title page. Just 500 copies of the hardback, and 500 of the paperback were printed. A collection of musings, quotes and aphorisms based on the figure of Palinurus, the pilot of Aeneas' ship in Virgil's Aeneid. Using the metaphor of this character, who fell overboard to atone for his deeds and whose spirit wanders the underworld, Connolly assesses his own personal journey on the brink of turning 40. The book is divided into four sections, with the third containing thinly-veiled references to the author's life in France, and the epilogue examining the myth from both historical and psychological aspects. Together with Enemies of Promise -which was published several years prior and outlines the author's observations about English Literature and writing - The Unquiet Grave is the work for which Connolly is best remembered. Rare signed. . Very Good. Soft cover. 1st Edition. 1st Printing. 1944.
