King's Messengers, S.P.G.. 1905?. Carefully crafted image of a Chinese man glued to stiff brown card backing approximately 10 x 7 inches. On verso of card is the text "King's Messengers, S.P.G. Rugby Branch. Passed Examination in Missionary Knowledge. Secretary...... Chaplain...... 19..." (The last three items left blank.) The King's Messengers adopted the lengthy acronym S.P.G. ("The Society for the Propagation of the Gospel in Foreign Parts,") in 1902. Presumably the delicately assembled 7-inch-tall figure was constructed at a Society mission in China and at some point glued to the backing. A loop at the top suggests that the figure was intended to hang free. The doll-like figure represents an unusual example of folk art; it is in very good clean condition. .
