About This Item
London: Underground Electric Railways Co. of London, Ltd, 1915. Original poster. Color lithograph. 40 x 25 inches.

This poster features an illustration of an idyllic English village scene. Villagers sit beneath large trees on the grass in front of a church. They are surrounded by cottages with thatched roofs. The text at the top indicates the motivational nature of the poster, reminding the viewer what they were fighting for. It reads: "The Underground Railways of London, knowing how many of their passengers are now engaged on important business in France and other parts of the world, send out this reminder of home." Beneath the image is printed the poem "A Wish" by Samuel Rogers. Sir George Clausen RA (1852-1944) was an English artist and illustrator. He held the post of Professor of Painting at the Royal Academy between 1904-06 and was appointed an official war artist in 1917. Some small tears to margins but no loss to printed area. Otherwise good condition.
