A very good, uncut copy in the publishers brown morocco grained cloth with printed paper label to the spine. Several gatherings unopened. A little chipping to the label but overall a very good clean copy of this uncommon First UK edition. --------- Channing (1780-1842) initially held a common American belief about the inferiority of African people and slaves and felt that that once freed, they would need overseers. The overseers (largely former slave masters) were necessary because the slaves would lapse into laziness. Furthermore, he did not join the abolitionist movement because he did not agree with their way of conducting themselves, and he felt that voluntary associations limited a person's autonomy. The books were one of the items sold at annual bazaars that were major fundraisers for the Boston Female Anti-Slavery Society, This volume contains writings by William Lloyd Garrison, John Quincy Adams, Edmund Quincy, James Russell Lowell, Maria Lowell, Edmund Jackson, Wendell Phillips, David Lee Child, Joseph Mazzini, and many others. Very Good, rear cover filled with faint pencil writing (showing list of different attractions visited on Nov. 3 and 4, 1933), 1" tear at top edge of wrappers at spine fold, small prior owner name title page. "Darkest Africa" presented representatives from Algeria, Nigeria, Kameroon, the Gold Coast, and the Belgian Congo brought to the Fair by Lew Dufour and Joe Rogers. Unfortunately "... several concessions, notably the Darkest Africa show, openly ridiculed African Americans. Furthermore, despite early promises from exposition directors, African Americans were discriminated against in exposition employment practices and were refused service in several restaurants on the fairgrounds."
