First Edition. 8vo. pp. xvi 960 , inscribed by the author to Sir George Taylor " With my best wishes, and thanks for creating the opportunity for me to tackle this work. H.M Birkill 12 Sept. 1985". Original dust very good with a little rubbing, now attractively presented in a removable clear archival sleeve. Hard-back binding, near fine. Contents clean and tight, unmarked, other than the noted inscription. A near fine copy with a very good dust jacket. [Sir George Taylor, born Edinburgh 1904, obtained a first class degree from Edinburgh University, went on to become the Keeper of Botany, British Museum; Director of Royal Botanic Gardens Kew, general plant collector and botanist.].
