This piece consists of excerpts from chapters 30-36 of Cabeza de Vaca's La Relación (first published in Madrid, 1542) in an 1851 translation by Thomas Buckingham Smith (1810-1871). La Relación tells of Cabeza de Vaca's adventures during eight years of travel with the Narvaez expedition in the Southwest of the current United States in the 16th century. This is Cabeza de Vaca's account of the first European's penetration into New Mexico.
