The introduction includes three sections by two physicians, the first on medical aspects of snakebite, describing prevention, field treatment and medical management, the second an annotated bibliography of snakebite in Latin America, and the third a guide to producers of antivenoms for venomous snakes in Latin America. Regional accounts are provided for each country possessing venomous reptiles, from Mexico south through Argentina. These accounts includes descriptions of the physiography, climate and vegetation, as well as identification keys and tables showing species distribution within each country. The majority of the book is devoted to detailed descriptions of the venomous reptiles. The species accounts for each genus begin with a summary of the salient characters of the genus. Next individual species are described. Included are local names, overall distribution, habitats, features of colour and scutellation, similar species and pertinent references.
