About This Item

NY: The Third Press, 1970. Book. Good. Hardcover. Inscribed by Author(s). 1st Edition. 1970. 1st Edition, 1st printing. 'VERDICT'-- SIGNED/INSCRIBED by VERNA SADOCK, illustration-artist of 200+'on-the-spot' sketches made at the notorious court-case called 'The Trial of the Chicago 8'. Words by Joseph Okpaku, African-American dramatist and publisher-owner of 'The Third Press'. VERNA SADOCK, an independent graphic artist, traveled daily to federal court to sketch the trial proceedings against the 'Chicago 8'. She went early each day to the court-house to find a good seat-- her sketches vividly capture the unpredictable personalities, hijinks and legal wrangling. The Federal lawsuit against the 'Chicago 8' accused the group of 'conspiracy and incitement to riot', responsible for the street riots in Chicago outside the Democratic National Convention in August, 1968. Joseph Okpaku, publisher of 'Verdict!', wrote in his introductory remarks that he chose court transcript-excerpts to record the 'nature of the Chicago 8 trial itself'-- with no distortions to the transcripts for purposes of humor or commentary. 'VERDICT!' moves briskly. Actual court transcripts & Sadock's sketches bring the trial to life: Abbie Hoffman stands on his head; Defense attorney Bill Kunstler embraces civil rights activist, Ralph Abernathy; Federal prosecutor Richard Schultz and Kunstler argue over the word 'pig' (an obscenity? or profanity?); Bobbie Seale, Black Panther Party Chairman, is gagged and shackled; celebrity visitors to court- Alan Ginsburg, Judy Collins, Pete Seeger, Arlo Guthrie, Norman Mailer, Julian Bond, Mayor Richard Daley. (Federal) 'Court Case of the United States of America, plaintiff vs. Bobby Seale, Abbie Hoffman, Jerry Rubin, Lee Weiner, John Froines and Dave Dellinger, Rennie Davis, Tom Hayden, Defendants'. In very good condition. Dust jacket has some edge tears and some loss. .
