London: James Cochrane and Co, 1832. Leather. Near Fine. Cruikshank, George. Sixmo size, 429 pp. Stand-alone stories, this volume was part of the Novelist's Library (Vol. X). Edited by Roscoe Tobias, Esq. (1791-1871), himself an author and translator; his own works include mostly travel memoirs.
"The Vicar of Wakefield", written by Oliver Goldsmith (1728-1774) was first published in 1766; it was sold for the princely sum of 60 pounds in order to pay Goldsmith's rent and became one of the most popular and widely read 18th-century novels among Victorians. "Sir Launcelot Greaves", by Tobias Smollett (1721-1771) was published in 1760 and is closely modelled on "Don Quixote". Written while the author was in prison, Smollett is better remembered today for his novels "The Adventures of Roderick Random" and "The Adventures of Peregrine Pickle", which influenced later authors such as Charles Dickens and George Orwell (info from Wikipedia).
___DESCRIPTION: Navy blue leather with gilt ornaments to all four corners of both the front and rear boards, same decoration in four of the six spine compartments, gilt lettering in other two with title and author, "Cruikshank Illustrations" in gilt at the tail of the spine, top edge gilt, gilt inner dentelles, plain endpapers, separate title pages for each novel, frontispiece being a steel engraving of Oliver Goldsmith, four Cruikshank illustrations (two in each novel); pagination: Vicar of Wakefield, vi, x (Memoir of Goldsmith 8 pp., 1 pg. ad, 1 blank), 168 pp. and Sir Launcelot, iv, 243.
___CONDITION: Volume is overall in near fine condition, with a strong, square text block, solid hinges, straight corners with a minimum of rubbing, the interior is clean and bright, and it is entirely free of prior owner markings; there is some overall edgewear, especially to the head and tail of the spine and the joints, however, the leather has remained supple (although the blue color on the spine has sunned to an olive color) and the gilt remains bright.
