There are 41 coloured full-page illustrations, with the description of the illustration by the editor. Olive coloured boards with gilt embossed coloured titles to the front panel and back strip. Illustrated dustwrapper showing "Lucky Diggers on the Road from Bendigo", with black coloured titles to the front panel and back strip. Samuel Thomas Gill was a young artist in Australia when Au was discovered in Victoria. He, like many other men, went to the goldfields to strike it rich. He didn't, but what he did do was to put pen to paper and capture the daily life [and death] of the 'digger' with a wealth of detail and humour.
