Barre, Massachusetts: Barre Publishers, 1965. Limited Edition. Folding Folio Case. Fine. Folio. Pp. 24 hand saddle-stitched book, 25 loose color plates and one map. Fall-down-back box in brown cloth, gilt lettering stamped on the front, book pocket inside. Edition limited to 500 copies. Prints have very gentle discoloration around the edges. Catherwood and travel writer John Lloyd Stephens made expeditions to Central America in 1839-41 and through their resulting drawings and writings first brought the Mayan civilization to the attention of a wide audience.
The book gives a historical outline and summary of the places visited, followed by notes on the plates. The engravings are based on Catherwood's drawings.
Prints were produced by the Meriden Photogravure Company from a hand-colored set of the 1844 London edition in the library of Edwin M. Shook, Harvard. Postage outside the Seattle area will be charged at cost, with no surcharge for handling.

All plates are in excellent condition. Housed in a very good (some minor scuffing) brown cloth covered clamshell box with gilt lettering. .

New York: Bartlett and Welford, 1844. First edition, one of three-hundred copies. Folio (21 x 14 1/4 inches; 533 x 361 mm.) [2], 24 pp. With the chromolithographed title by Owen Jones, lithographed map, twenty-six lithographs on twenty-five plates, and original paper guards. Contemporary half red morocco over red cloth, professionally rebacked retaining original spine. Spine with raised bands lettered and tooled in gilt. Marbled endpapers (nonpareil patten), all edges gilt. New tissue guards inserted alongside original paper guards. Several of the originals with Japanese paper repair. Some foxing throughout (though much less than usually seen), especially to margins. Dark stains to front and back boards. Fore-edge marginal restoration to title-page and plates 20, 22, and 24. Overall a very good copy housed in a grey cloth clamshell case with gilt lettering piece on spine. Catherwood's Views of Ancient Monuments is very rare at market, and often considerably more foxed than this copy. The work…
