About This Item
Vingt mille lieues sous Les mers. French (making it the True) First Edition. This is the illustrated 322,433 pg . version that was released in 1870 following the Spanish publication in Spain the year previous. This brown- leather-spined with brown-cloth hard cover is identical to that of the Spanish binding, however provinance provided with this book shows a receipt for binding work and this complete and only slightly spotted (with expected soil) novel is truely a one of a kind French -First version up for sale . Originally , there were three editions: one economical, without illustrations; another one in small format, with a few illustrations; and a third one in a bigger in-octavo format and richly illustrated. It is the last edition that is now very popular among book collectors. Especially popular are first editions of Jules Vernes' best known novels and this one is not only his most famous but this particular version contains almost 25% more text from this Jules Verne masterpiece! For more than a hundred years the mis-translated English versions were the only versions available until 1998's Butcher edition annotated from the French original, which corrected and better translated the actual meaning and correct words Verne intended. . *Also pictured is the original publication of the true first release in 2 volumes of the 'magasin de education,"" which included the complete 20k novel in 1869 and 1870. They were from the publishers (Hetzel) 'magasin de education .' As you can see the similarities of the covers and bindings between A.) the Spanish first ,B.) the two volumes, and this book you can see the sequence and note the authenticity of this book. It speaks for itself . All that's needed is a worthy home and the price will be appreciated only by the well balanced and interested collector. Please mention your appreciation so it's known you read the full listing and six thousand dollars will be deducted from total and the book will be available for purchase.
