Virgo Maria mystica sub solis imagines emblematicè expressa

by Jan de Leenheer (1642-1691)

  • Used

Scarce emblem book with 26 original plates by Bouttats

Jan de Leenheer (1642-1691).

Virgo Maria mystica sub solis imagines emblematicè expressa. [Brussels], s.n., 1681.

4°, [40], 110, [2] pp., with an engraved frontispiece, full-page coat-of-arms, woodcut title-vignette, 26 full-page engravings and woodcut head- and tailpieces. On the title the words Virgo and Maria are arranged in the shape of a cross. 19th century half blonde roan with marbled sides.

Only edition of a Southern Netherlandish Marian emblem book by Jan de Leenheer, illustrated with 26 full-page engravings made by Gaspar Bouttats (1640-1696) for this publication, text in Latin and Dutch. The impressive full-page coat-of-arms face the dedication to Diego-Ferdinand de Villegas baron of Hovorst (1658-1723), a spouse of a Belgian noble count family originally from Spain. Just two titles are known from Jan de Leenheer, both poetry in Latin and Dutch and both about women. The contrast between the works is striking. His first and most common book is known for its disdain for women: Theatrvm stvltorvm joco-serium, sive mvndvs fatvvs emblematicè expressus = Tooneel der sotten, af-beeldende door kluchtighe, maer gestichtighe sinne-spreucken, de sotheydt van de weirel (Brussels, 1669). The present 1681 publication is the rarest, and is remarkably flattering for women. According to a 19th century source this turnaround happened because De Leenheer got very ill after the first work, but he recovered and wrote the second work as a saving grace towards Maria (see Witsen Geysbeek).

Vermeulen, Jan de Leenheer o.e.s.a. : moralisator en humanist : een inleiding tot zijn leven en zijn werken. Nijmegen: Janssen, 1964; Praz, 399.

Condition: bookplate of the Jules Chamonin library, Dunkirk on front paste-down. Number in red ink on blank verso of frontispiece. Faded stain on the last few pages. Minor tear in foot margin of F4. Hinges a little rubbed. Otherwise in very good condition.

Description:
1499 Mantuanus Poetry + 1507 Satires of Persius Post-Incunable Satyrae ROME Roce

Along with Juvenal, Persius was one of the greatest 1st century Roman satirists. His works consisted of elements of stoicism and were greatly influenced by Horace and Juvenal, in fact the satires of both Juvenal and Persius are often found published together. In his 'Satires', Persius sought a few major philosophical ideas:
·
important questions to ask the gods
·
the meaning of life
·
the importance of gaining knowledge
·
freedom through Stoicism
·
the proper use of money

This 1507 post-incunable printing of Persius's 'Satyrae' was published in Paris by Jean Barbier and Denis Roce. This edition was edited by Giovanni Britannico, a 15th-century grammarian who is best known for his edition of Persius.

This book is bound with another early Roce printing of Baptista Mantuanus poetry. Mantuanus was a Carmelite poet whose 15th-century works were influential during the Protestant… Read More

Description:
Oxford: Printed by Leonard Lichfield, 1642 An extremely scarce 1st edition copy of Francis Potter's work. Potter (1594-1678) was a clergyman with a wide range of other interests. He was an early member of the Royal Society (admitted in 1663), experimenting with bees, theorising about blood transfusion and making instruments including a sundial. He developed a theory that the approximate square root of 666 - 25 - had a strong connection with catholic institutions. His first attempt to set this out in 1637 was described as a 'wonderful discovery' by Joseph Mede, whose 'judgement' is included in the work. This copy has been rebacked, relaying as much as possible of the spine, which has raised bands, red title label and the date at the base. The corners have been rebuilt. The boards are marbled with a stain on the rear board. Edges are scuffed. Internally there is the armorial bookplate of William Legge to the front pastedown endpaper. The endpaper joints have been repaired. Page edges are red. Contents:… Read More

Quintus Curtius Rufus, De rebus gestis Alexandri Magni. Cum annotationibus D. ErasmiFolio. [4], LXXXIX leaves; [10], 124 pages. Late sixteenth (?) century leather; light scuffing, hinges cracked but cords holding tightly; insect damage to text block with loss of text throughout; margins in Orosius trimmed close, affecting title image. First printing of Erasmus' critical edition of Quintus Curtius. This first century Roman biography of Alexander the Great was an early Renaissance bestseller, with editions from at least a dozen printers throughout Europe by 1517. Erasmus brought it as reading material on a voyage to England in 1517, and finding the text incomplete and corrupt, he prepared his own critical edition. This was first published by his friend Strasbourg printer Matthias Schürer in 1518. Erasmus' version proved so popular that five more printers had issued their own editions of his text by 1541; these in turn were reprinted a total of five more times by 1575. This first edition is… Read More
