[Cambridge]: Stamperia del Cigno / Cygnet Press, 1928. unpaginated, 5.25x6.5 inches, twenty woodcuts from the 1497 edition, fine presswork on fine mouldmade paper, text in Italian, cloth-backed boards spine-titled gilt with a paper cover-label. Front board bears an inch-long scratch, signatures show gutter gaps but item even so is sound. FYI, the line-drawn cuts are of course re-cut from originals. Good to very good copy, enclosed in a small flat box to size as issued; this box is worn with marginal tears and pressure marks. First book of the Cygnet Press, on the life of Saint Jerome; presumably reproduces a vernacular incunable.

A biography of Saint Jerome that originally appeared in the 1497 edition of the saint's letters translated into Italian by Matteo da Ferrara. The first publication of the imprint, undertaken "by a group of bookish enthusiasts, chief among them being Mr. George Parker Winship" - Ransom. The text and woodcuts were derived from the 1497 edition of St. Jerome's Letters printed at Ferrara, and the whole printed in Goudy's Italian Old Style. He is best known for his translation of the Bible into Latin (the translation that became known as the Vulgate) and his commentaries on the whole Bible. Vita de Sancto Hieronymo [with original manuscript letter by Philip Hofer, later Curator of the Department of Printing and Graphic Arts at Harvard's Houghton Library, discussing his work at the [Pierpont] Morgan Library and the first product of Cygnet Press, "Vita de Sancto Hieronymo", which he and George Parker Winship had produced 6 years earlier: "The little book which accompanies this note is one which George Parker Winship and I set by hand and printed a few years ago. It amused us, and, I hope, will amuse you. Of course we would do it differently now - that is always the way !". The letter, on Hofer's stationery with his address at 14 East Ninetieth Street, is addressed to one Dr. Collija in Stockholm, on June 25, 1934 and Hofer reminisces about the wonderful time he had there and how he wants to return to Sweden.
