Numerous jurists throughout history have made commentary on Justinian and created their own perspectives on the famed 'Corpus Juris Civilis'. Sixth-century Byzantine jurist Theophilus Antecessor was one such mind who wrote a commentary on each portion of Justinian's 'Corpus Juris'. This 1556 edition of Theophilus was edited by Jacques de Corte.

While serving as Professor of law at Paris, Francis I summoned him to work on the Roman Rota and he was retained by Henry II. These are the core volumes on understanding constitutional thought in sixteenth-century France. In three volumes. Volume I and II were published in 1555.
