Petrograd: Knigoizdatel'stvo "Ogni", 1917. First edition. Octavo (16 × 12 cm). Original printed wrappers; 108, [4] pp. of advertisements. A fine copy. Early edition of this work about World War I by the Russian revolutionary and Marxist thinker Georgi Plekhanov (1856-1918), published as part of a series titled "The citizen's library" (Biblioteka grazhdanina). First published in 1915, Plekhanov's work is an indictment of what he saw as an Austro-German politics of aggression, supported by a hypocritical Social Democrat government, combined with an attempt to present a positive view of the Entente Powers. Plekhanov was convinced that Russia's military defeat would, in fact, only strengthen the Tsarist regime -- a strange assertion which led to severe criticism by Lenin, and later accusations that he had, in fact, defended the Tsar during World War I.
