"The discovery of coal in Northern KwaZulu Natal nearly one hundred and forty years ago set the stage for the development of the coal mining industry in the region. Mother Nature created an extremely challenging mining environment that at times has imposed a heavy toll on human life. The need arose for the formation of a mines rescue service. A corps of trained men, with courage, skill and efficiency, combined with the use of modern breathing apparatus and ancillary equipment, who could be called upon in emergencies. Their focus was in saving lives and limiting further loss. The Central Mine Rescue Station in Dundee is one of four Rescue Stations in South Africa that provide mine emergency response and consultancy services to the mining industry. This year the South African Mines Rescue Service celebrates its 75th Anniversary. The launch of this book to co-incide with the celebrations is a fitting tribute to the men and their ladies who serve our mining industry and a fitting historical record of those who preceded us." - Foreword. .
