Great covers on this antique copy of "Morford's Short-Trip Guide to America" (United States and Dominion of Canada) by Henry Morford. 1873; Sheldon & Co.; New York. With a large fold-out "Map of Railways in the United States and Canada." Please see the photos for the complete list of contents. There is an advertising ("Announcements") section at the back of the book that contains many wonderfully illustrated ads. From the "Advertisement" section:"The preparation of the 'Short-Trip Guide to America' was induced by the practical success of the Guide to Europe, on the same plan, and the generally admitted want of some hand-book for tourists in America, fitted for pocket-use, and railway, carriage or steamer reading, by convenient size, clearness of type, and giving the data most ordinarily required, while carefully avoiding tedious and unnecessary details. Such a book had long been regarded as a necessity."Condition:The bottom-left corner of the back cover is bumped. Tight binding. No cracks. No loose… Read More

Description:
New York: Selmar Hess This heavy volume was one of a series of books on geography, history, and travel published by Selmar Hess of New York. Although undated, my research of similar volumes in this series indicates that it was published between 1866 and 1875. It's notable for hundreds of beautiful mid-19th Century illustrations, many of which are engravings with original tissue guards. However, the illustrations with tissue guards often have foxing, particularly in the margin areas, possibly as a result of acidity in the tissue guards themselves. The other illustrations and pages are mainly free of foxing. Countries and cities featured in this particular volume (Volume 4), include Norway; Tripoli; St. Petersburgh, Russia; Lebanon including Beyrut (Beirut) and the Cedars of Lebanon; Mexico; New Caledonia (French); Portugal; Athens, Greece; The Bermudas; West Indies; British Guiana; Isthmus of Panama; and Denmark. This unusual book is in Very Good - condition. The decorative brown cloth covers… Read More

Small quarto (10" x 7") issued in blue cloth with gilt lettering to spine and pictorial sailing ship to front cover. Edited by David P Gamble and P E H Hair. Third Series, volume 2. First edition. In 1623 Richard Jobson published an account of a 1620-1621 English voyage up River Gambia, during which a party, led by himself, penetrated to a point some 460 miles up river. The purpose of the voyage was to make contact with the gold trade of the West African interior, but in this there was little success. However, Jobson's account of the river, its commerce, natural history, peoples, religions, and politics, was the earliest to appear in print, in this fullness of detail, in any language. it was also the earliest detailed account of any part of Black Africa, by an Englishman. Octavo (8 3/4" x 5 1/2") issued in blue cloth with gilt lettering to spine and gilt sailing ship to front cover. Translated by Anthony Mango. Second Series, volumes 138 and 139. First edition.By the early sixteenth century the loosely knit kingdom of Georgia had disintegrated from the strong monarch of the middle ages to a number of small states and principalities. This internal disunity made the Georgians easy victims of the power politics of the neighboring Ottoman and Safavid empires, and by the end of the century the southward drive of the Russians intensified the struggle for military and diplomatic control over the whole of the Caucasian isthmus. As a result of this struggle seventeen embassies were exchanged between the Russian tsars and the Georgian kins ruling in Kakheti during the years 1564-1605. W E D Allen and Anthony… Read More
