Paris: Ruault, 1776. First Edition. Hardcover. Two small ink stamps on the title page, some offsetting, occasional spotting, a few finger-marks; old bookseller description pasted to the front pastedown. Minor repairs to the binding. Overall a clean, Near Fine example of this scarce title. Quarto (7-7/8" x 10") bound in contemporary gilt-ruled polished calf leather rebacked preserving the gilt-decorated spine with morocco spine label, marbled endpapers; xii, [iv], 206, [2] pages. Complete with the half-title page and 119 full-page engraved plates (numbered to 120 as issued, including the frontispiece), a few folding, largely depicting the botany and birds (79 plates) of New Guinea. The beautiful plates are for the most exotic birds, including one of the first representations of the Australian Kookaburra, named here the "great Kingfisher New Guinea." Nissen 885; Wood 577; Zimmer 596-597. The flora depicted include palms and spices (nutmeg and cloves). Much detailed information about the Moluccas and Manila as well as the island of Luzon in Antigua.

Sonnerat made several voyages to southeast Asia, visiting the Philippines and Moluccas between 1769 and 1772, and India and China from 1774 to 1781. He was the first person to give a scientific description of the south Chinese fruit tree lychee. The standard author abbreviation Sonn. is used to indicate this individual as the author when citing a botanical name. He was known to speak out against the prevalent racism of his day.

Rifa'a Rafi' al Tahtawi (1801-1873) was born in the village of Tahta, Sohag, the same year the French troops evacuated Egypt. He was an Azharite recommended by his teacher and mentor Hassan El-Attar to be the chaplain of a group of students Mohammed Ali was sending to Paris in 1826. Many student missions from Egypt went to Europe in the early 19th century to study arts and sciences at European universities and acquire technical skills such as printing, shipbuilding and modern military techniques. According to his memoir Rihla (Journey to Paris), Tahtawi studied ethics, social and political philosophy, and mathematics and geometry. He read works by Condillac, Voltaire, Rousseau, Montesquieu and Bézout among others during his séjour in France. In 1831, Tahtawi returned home to be part of the statewide effort to "modernize" the Egyptian infrastructure and education. In fine modern dark green full leather binding of Islamic Mamluk style decoration. The author who was a well-known sholar in Arabic literature and later embraced Islam, came from a famous Maronite family in Mont Libanon. He moved to Istanbul during the Ottoman Sultan Abdul Aziz era where he established al Jawa'ib printing house to print the first political Arabic newspaper in the same name of the printing house. Approx. 1040 issues were published of al Jawa'ib newspaper, then a collection of important news and articles from the newspaper were published in al Jawa'ib also by Ahmad Faris's nefew, Selim Faris in 7 volumes. Bound in brown half-leather over marbled boards, title in gilt within a red title piece. The first edition of the author's first book. William Wilson (1772-1849) inherited a substantial sum from an uncle, and decided to indulge his passion for travel. He travelled throughout Europe and The Middle East and wrote a series of books. This was his first, and it was the most popular, going through several editions. This is a good copy as all plates, including the frontispiece, have been excised. The boards show moderate wear, heavier at the spine ends. The front hinge is cracked. The text block is mainly clean with a few marks of unknown origin.
