London: H. Hughes, for G. Nicol and T. Cadell, 1785. 4 volumes. (Text: 3 vols., quarto [11 1/4 x 9 inches]; Atlas vol. of plates: 1 vol., large folio [21 ½ x 16 ¾ inches]).Text: Engraved medallion portrait vignettes by James Hogg on titles, 1 folding letterpress table. Atlas vol.: 87 engraved plates, plans and maps (one double-page, one folding), the 24 plates normally found bound in the text vol. here bound in the atlas unfolded and untrimmed. Text: contemporary tree calf, red morocco spine labels (neat repairs to head and foot of spines). Atlas: contemporary half calf and marbled-paper boards, red morocco spine labels. (Some wear to head and tail of spine) A fine unsophisticated set of the third edition of the third voyage, with the plates in their most desirable form: all the plates usually found in the text volumes are here bound, unfolded and uncut, in the atlas volume. "The famous accounts of Captain Cook's three voyages form the basis for any collection of Pacific books. In three great voyages Cook did more to clarify the geographical knowledge of the southern hemisphere than all his predecessors had done together. He was really the first scientific navigator and his voyages made great contributions to many fields of knowledge" (Hill). "Cook's third voyage was organized to seek the Northwest Passage and to return [the islander] Omai to Tahiti. Officers of the crew included William Bligh, James Burney, James Colnett, and George Vancouver. John Webber was appointed artist to the expedition. After calling at Kerguelen Island, Tasmania, New Zealand, and the Cook, Tonga, and Society Islands, the expedition sailed north and discovered Christmas Island and the Hawaiian Islands, which Cook named the Sandwich Islands. Cook charted the American west coast from Northern California through the Bering Strait as far north as latitude 70 degrees 44 minutes before he was stopped by pack ice. He returned to Hawaii for the winter and was killed in an unhappy skirmish with the natives over a boat. Charles Clarke took command and after he died six months later, the ships returned to England under John Gore. Despite hostilities with the United States and France, the scientific nature of this expedition caused the various governments to exempt these vessels from capture. The voyage resulted in what Cook judged his most valuable discovery - the Hawaiian Islands" (Hill). The typography of the second and third editions of the text of the third voyage is generally considered superior to the first. For the second and subsequent editions, Hughes took over the printing from Strahan and re-set the text. Contemporary support for this view is reported by Forbes who quotes an inscription in a set presented by Mrs. Cook to her doctor, Dr. Elliotson, which notes "the letter press of the second edition being much superior to the first both in paper & letter press." The third edition of the text is notable for its inclusion for the first time of an 8-pp. defense of Captain Cook against criticism by the French. This addition is authored by William Wales (the astronomer/navigator of Cook's second voyage) and refers to criticism of Cook's second voyage by French astronomer Pierre Charles Le Monnier. In 1739, the French captain De Bouvet had discovered, to the south of the Cape of Good Hope, an island which he named Cape Circumcision. Captain Cook, on his second voyage, had been unable to find it, and was led to suspect that the French had mistaken some bank of ice for an island. Le Monnier stated, in a paper which was read at the Academis des Soionora, that Cook was jealous of the earlier French discovery and had purposefully sought for the island under a different meridian than that which had been assigned to it. Wales's reply to Le Monnier was added to the third edition of Cook's third voyage in which Le Monnier's criticism is firmly disproved. The island was later "discovered" by the Swan and the Otter in their 1808 voyage (at a different location than the French had recorded) and is now called Bouvet Island. Copies of the Third Voyage with the plates from the text uncut, unfolded and bound into the atlas are rare. Such sets are more desirable, as the plates may be enjoyed more fully without the usual folds and losses from irregular trimming by the binder. Beddie 1543; Forbes 85; Hill (2004) 361; Lada-Mocarski 37; cf. Printing and the Mind of Man 223; Sabin 16250.

[Paris]: Jacques Guerin, 1739. Quarto. (9 5/8 x 7 13/16 inches). 18pp. Contemporary paper-backed boards. The very rare first edition of Bellin's extensive account of the "Ocean Meridional." The work includes lengthy separate analyses of the coasts of Africa and of South America as recorded on the map. In addition to geographic locations, observations made in the regions by various explorers are cited. The cartographer Bellin was employed for more than five decades in the French Hydrographic Service, where he served as the first "Ingénieur hydrographe de la Marine." Commissioned to develop new surveys of the coasts of France and then the known coasts of the world, these were published, respectively, as Le Neptune Français in 1735 and the Hydrographie Français between 1756 and 1765. Bellin also published a Petit Atlas Maritime with 580 charts and plans of harbors, issued in five volumes in 1764. The present work was later published as one of thirty reprinted pamphlets in the author's Recueil des… Read More

Paris: Jean Gesselin, 1613. 8vo. [8],90,[1]pp. Lacks the world map, as is almost always the case. Titlepage vignette. Leaves A5 & A6 with a small, expert paper repair in lower margin, not affecting text. Twentieth century morocco bound to contemporary style, tooled and ruled in gilt, spine richly gilt Drake's Circumnavigation. The first French edition of Drake's circumnavigation, translated from the account inserted in the 1589 edition of Hakluyt's Principal Navigations. The text is traditionally attributed to Francis Pretty, though it is more likely that the information was compiled by Richard Hakluyt himself from three or more sources (see Wagner, Drake's Voyage). Wagner notes that the additional information found in this French edition but not in Hakluyt is "small but significant" and calls this "the most complete translation of all." Drake's circumnavigation was one of the most important events in maritime history, and this account must have been eagerly read by the French, who would not… Read More

Description:
London, E. Newbury, 1785, Second and enlarged edition, Contemporary calf gilt, with a folding engraved map and 10 engraved plates, one folding which is the first representation of Hawaii.
This work is attributed to Lieutenant John Rickman, who served as second lieutenant on the 'Discovery', Charles Clerk, Commander. This is the first full account in English of Cook's third voyage and has an important description of the death of Cook in Hawaii. It was first published in 1781, three years before the official account.
"This anonymous journal, of Captain Cook's third voyage, was once believed to have been written by John Ledyard, who had actually made liberal use of Lieutenant Rickman's account; hence the confusion. This narrative anticipated the government's authorized account by two years. All the journals kept on board were claimed by the Admiralty, thus the author remained strictly anonymous. The text, especially as regards details of Cook's death, differs considerably from other accounts." Hill

Description:
Indianapolis: Dog Ear Publishing, January 2013. Trade Paperback. Fine. Slight reading wear to corners, otherwise pristine. Not from a library. No remainder mark. Not clipped. Not damaged. Suitable for gifting. 163 pages. The 25 authors of this book were volunteers in the first Peace Corps rural community development project in Africa: Sierra Leone, 1965-67. They are also the first group to tell a collective story of Peace Corps volunteers, anywhere. The Peace Corps was in its infancy then, and memories of John Kennedy were strong among the young volunteers. Sierra Leone was also in its infancy in the first few years after independence, before military coups and tribal warfare became common. The authors forthrightly recount their feelings of loneliness and isolation, and their frightening experiences with secret societies and witchcraft, but their uniquely optimistic "can-do" American attitude brought most through a great life experience.

London: Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme & Brown, 1823. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Good/No Jacket. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. pp: [viii]ix-xii [1]2-544. FIRST EDITION. Bound in brown half-leather over marbled boards, title in gilt within a red title piece. The first edition of the author's first book. William Wilson (1772-1849) inherited a substantial sum from an uncle, and decided to indulge his passion for travel. He travelled throughout Europe and The Middle East and wrote a series of books. This was his first, and it was the most popular, going through several editions. This is a good copy as all plates, including the frontispiece, have been excised. The boards show moderate wear, heavier at the spine ends. The front hinge is cracked. The text block is mainly clean with a few marks of unknown origin.

Octavo (8 3/4" x 5 1/2") issued in blue cloth with gilt lettering to spine and gilt sailing ship to front cover. Translated by Anthony Mango. Second Series, volumes 138 and 139. First edition.By the early sixteenth century the loosely knit kingdom of Georgia had disintegrated from the strong monarch of the middle ages to a number of small states and principalities. This internal disunity made the Georgians easy victims of the power politics of the neighboring Ottoman and Safavid empires, and by the end of the century the southward drive of the Russians intensified the struggle for military and diplomatic control over the whole of the Caucasian isthmus. As a result of this struggle seventeen embassies were exchanged between the Russian tsars and the Georgian kins ruling in Kakheti during the years 1564-1605. W E D Allen and Anthony… Read More
