Atlas volume, issued separately, is not included. Full leather with leather labels. Spines rubbed, with small chip at head of volume II. Leather labels are whole and good. Text block is tight, sound and square. Pressed flora laid in (mostly ferns) with small label: "Brandywine Banks, Chester Co. Penna Sept 20th, 1877. Boards are detached, with some rubbing and scraping, else good. Boards are held in archival acetate jackets. Engraved medallion on two title pages; 24 engraved maps, coastal profiles, and charts, 13 of which folding - complete, as required. Text and plates heavily foxed throughout. This is the second and best edition of the text of the official account of Cook's third and last voyage, reset by Hughs, "...the letter press of the second edition being much superior to the first both in paper & letter press" (citing Mrs. Cook). In 1778 Cook became the first European to travel to the Hawaiian Islands. The Voyage included the west coast of America, Canada and Alaska. "Cook's third voyage was organized to seek the Northwest Passage and to return to Tahiti. Officers of the crew included William Bligh, James Burney, James Colnett, and George Vancouver.
